About this position

The potential for AI-based technologies to fundamentally alter how we live and work is potentially limitless — but to harness and preserve the value created requires attention to and the management of the attendant risks. How to build Responsible (Fair, Accountable and Transparent) AI is among the greatest challenges in the technology and data field today. We are now looking for a talented, highly energized consultant to join our team. You will work across different domains on AI and help design and implement responsible AI strategies via assessment practices.

A research project manager with a background or strong interest in AI is wanted for working on assessing the non-technical impacts of AI projects for YAGHMA, a consultancy enterprise specialising in AI impact/risk assessment.

As research project manager, you will work on developing a quantitative framework that systematically assess the impact of AI projects. The job includes both research, development and assessment tasks, including identification of relevant impact areas, quantification of impact areas into indicators, association to technical aspects and evaluation using empirical research (e.g., data collection, stakeholder consultations, interviews).

In YAGHMA, we assess the non-financial, non-technical aspects of new technologies in various fields to help our clients and research project partners make a positive impact on the world with their innovations. To stay on the forefront of the research on social, ethical, governmental, legal and environmental impacts, we participate in various European and International research projects where we assess non-technical, non-financial aspects of the innovative solutions proposed by the project partners. Currently our focus is AI Impact Assessment aspects in health, manufacturing, energy, and mobility fields.

What will be your role?

We are looking for someone with curiosity and the desire to explore complex questions with a group of like-minded colleagues. You come with a strong scientific background connecting social and ethical assessment with the fields of AI and digitalisation, digital governance, the impact of AI. You feel comfortable working within a team that’s both multidisciplinary and multinational. You will also:

  • Have a relevant PhD or master’s degree with subsequent research experience, as well as demonstrable experience playing a key role in assessment within the AI domain;

  • Have an outstanding track record of collaboration in complex and large scale national and preferably European research projects (eg. Horizon) as Subject Matter Expert;

  • Experienced in leading and/or setting up (inter)national networks and collaborations;

In the role as AI Impact Assessment expert, you can expect the following tasks:

  • Develop a value-driven quantitative framework for systematic assessment of impacts of AI projects

  • Conceptualize and develop frameworks and tools to assist AI impact assessment

  • Assess the impact of specific AI projects using both the developed quantitative framework as well as qualitative methods

  • Monitor the impact of AI projects over time

  • Perform ethical and social risk assessment for AI systems. It is seen as a plus, if you have experience and interest in performing or assisting in performing legal, regulatory or environmental risk assessments.

  • Perform assessment of ethical and social requirements for AI projects

  • Prepare reports on the ethical, social, (possibly) legal and (possibly) environmental risks/issues of specific AI systems at various stages in the development process

  • Perform research related to projects, e.g. verifying the impacts of AI systems in different domains such as healthcare, manufacturing and automation, and AI systems in public services

  • Support clients in the integration of solutions that improve the ethical and social aspects of their AI systems. Experience with and interest in supporting improvement of legal or environmental aspects is seen as a plus

  • Regularly perform literature reviews on AI impacts, assessment and monitoring.

  • Stay up to date about AI systems in different domain e.g. healthcare, manufacturing/automation, mobility and energy and for AI/ML systems for public services.

What we expect from you

The candidate must have the following qualifications:

PhD; alternatively master’s degree in AI or related topics, e.g., control, data science OR alternatively a degree specialized in assessment of new technologies as well as multiple years working experience with AI

  • Affinity to the ethical, social, socio-economic issues related to new and emerging technologies in the context of AI.

  • Good at conceptualisation and method design.

  • Strong organisational and analytical skills.

  • Effective communication with a variety of partners from diverse backgrounds.

  • Excellent skills in multi-stakeholder engagement and coordination.

  • Ability to occasionally travel within Europe.

  • Fluency in English (written and oral).

Conditions and selection process

In the role, you will occasionally (typically 2-4 times per year) travel to meet external project partners and disseminate the obtained research results. Scientific publication is possible but not mandatory. We prioritize working form our office in Delft and accommodate working from home approximately once a week with a task-driven approach. The position is 60-100% depending on your availability and qualifications. Start date can be negotiated, preferably before September 1st.
